The 15th edition of Oncology Days

Major breakthroughs in the actions of the OECI and renewal of the “Comprehensive Cancer Center” accreditation for Institut Curie

From June 14 to 16, 2023, the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), along with Institut Curie and with support from the Fondation ARC, is jointly organizing the 15th edition of Oncology Days in Paris, to honor the 120th birthday of Marie Sklodowska-Curie. These three intense days of scientific and medical lectures, discussions and debates will bring together a great many experts in oncology, healthcare professionals, patient representatives, public decision makers and manufacturers in the healthcare field, all committed to the fight against cancer. At these meetings Institut Curie will be awarded, for the second time, the “Comprehensive Cancer Center” label of excellence, highlighting its reputation in Europe and beyond, and the expertise and excellence of its teams.

“This 2023 edition of Oncology Days marks the 45th anniversary of the OECI and I am delighted that these meetings are taking place in Paris, with the support of Institut Curie and the Fondation ARC. They will bring together experts from all over Europe to talk, debate and promote the emergence of initiatives to bring oncology research even further, to optimize the organization of national health and research systems within the European framework, and to pave the way for ground-breaking therapeutic solutions to beat cancer“, announced Professor Thierry Philip, President of the OECI and Chairman of the Institut Curie’s Executive Board.

Commitment on a Europe-wide scale to fight cancer

The 2023 edition of Oncology Days will present the main current actions of the Cancer Mission and of “Europe’s beating cancer plan”. The main scientific conference will focus on “Cell as a therapy”, and a session will be devoted to the quality of care, research and teaching in oncology. A number of round-table sessions will bring together health professionals, patient representatives, public decision-makers and manufacturers in the healthcare field in person or remotely. Véronique Trillet-Lenoir, MEP and oncologist, will take part in the round-table discussions on “Science and politics of cancer”.

Some fifty European experts will take the floor during the Oncology Days, including Prof. Thierry Philip, President of the OECI and Chairman of Institut Curie’s Executive Board, as well as Prof. Steven Le Gouill, Director of Institut Curie’s Hospital Group and Dr. Sebastien Amigorena, CNRS research director and team leader at Institut Curie, who will both present at the scientific conference dedicated to cellular therapy.

THE EXCELLENCE AND EXPERTISE OF CURIE HONORED BY OECI ACCREDITATION

The “Comprehensive Cancer Center” label of excellence will be awarded for the second time to Institut Curie as part of the renewal of the OECI accreditation, for a period of 5 years. This collective ongoing improvement approach by Institut Curie is supported by Unicancer to establish the model for cancer centers inspired by the Curie model. Its aim is to assess Institut Curie’s three missions: research, care, preservation and transmission of know-how.

“The renewal of OECI accreditation represents a marker of international excellence, and is a tool for recognition of the Curie model. It pays tribute to the high quality of the organization, of the healthcare offering and of the research activity at Institut Curie. And it is through the daily commitment of the staff at Institut Curie, working each day to fight against cancer, and to fight for patients”, declares Prof. Thierry Philip, Chairman Institut Curie’s Executive Board.

The accreditation certificate will be officially awarded on Friday June 16, 2023, at the Annual General Meeting of the OECI during the “Oncology Days”.

Lastly, these 15th Oncology Days will feature the announcement of the new OECI president, a position filled for the past 3 years by Prof. Thierry Philip, who will be replaced by Prof. Giovanni Apolone, scientific director of the “Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori” in Milan, appointed to head the OECI for a five-year term.

An edition dedicated to the solidarity of European cancer centers with Ukraine

The 2023 edition will also be an opportunity to present the actions conducted by the Cancer Mission as well as its European cancer plan, and to draft the outline of a European intervention plan, in collaboration with the Ukrainian specialists in attendance. The goal is to help restructure the Ukrainian healthcare system, to help rebuild healthcare institutions destroyed by the war, and to promote research activity.

On this occasion, Mr. François Braun, France’s minister for Health and Prevention, will attend via video link to pay tribute to France’s support for Ukraine on healthcare issues, and in particular assistance to cancer patients.
