A little more than 61,000 breast cancers are diagnosed each year in France. Around the world, certain gynecological cancers, such as cervical cancer, are among the most common female cancers. In order to respond to the urgency of the challenge and reduce mortality rates, it is crucial to better understand these complex diseases.
TheWomen's Cancer Institute, co-founded by Institut Curie, PSL University and Inserm, bring together the cutting-edge expertise of researchers, clinicians, mathematicians, bioinformaticians, sociologists, and economists. As such, it is particularly well positioned to conduct large-scale research in order to explore the origins of tumors, their evolution over time, the specific characteristics of the rarest and most complex cancers, and the associated societal issues.
"Combining our research expertise with Google's advanced technological capabilities offers hope for significant progress in our mission to improve the understanding and prediction of the evolution of cancer, and to develop more effective treatments," explains Dr. Anne-Vincent Salomon.
The teams of theWomen's Cancer Institute will thus develop AI tools in partnership with Google to help better diagnose cancers and predict each patient's response to treatment.
These technologies will also be used in order to identify new biomarkers capable of predicting which patients will be able to benefit from certain specific therapies, especially for patients whose tumors are resistant to treatments.
Accessing the right information at the right time is a key factor when it comes to health. That's why YouTube Health and Institut Curie are working together to be able to provide reliable information on the Institut Curie channel. This prevention approach is part of a common objective to fight against misinformation, raise awareness of risk factors, and increase screening and monitoring rates.
Through Google.org, the philanthropic branch of Google, funding of more than $2 million will be granted to PSL University to accelerate scientific research applied to AI. In addition to the research partnership with the Women's Cancer Institute, the program will fund the research of postdoctoral researchers from PSL University using AI to improve the understanding and prevention of women's cancers. The initiative will also allow teams from the Women's Cancer Institute, PSL University, and Google Research to work on joint projects in order to advance state-of-the-art technologies in these fields.
The postdoctoral researchers will also benefit from the experiences and case studies shared by Google researchers under the supervision of Joelle Barral, Senior Research Director at Google DeepMind, and Cedric Denis-Rémis, Vice-President of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development at PSL University.

About the Women's Cancer Institute
The Institut des Cancers des Femmes is an IHU (university hospital institute) accredited in 2023, founded by Institut Curie, PSL University and Inserm, with the aim of strengthening the research-care continuum by bringing together the scientific, medical and paramedical expertise of Institut Curie alongside that of the co-founders and patient associations. The Institut des Cancers des Femmes concerns all projects relating to breast and gynecological cancers, and aims to improve cancer prevention for women, cure more and more female cancer patients, and limit relapses and their impact on quality of life. The project is structured around four major pillars, with an unprecedented contribution from the human and social sciences: a better understanding of the biology of women's cancers, to better prevent and detect cancers, particularly in at-risk patients, and avoid relapses; the development of new personalized therapeutic options to reduce mortality rates, particularly in rare forms; the adaptation of cancer management to women's quality of life, and the provision of comprehensive support for patients; better training for professionals in the specific challenges of these cancers.
